Question & Answer
Host A Friend
As we mentioned in our Announcements in this month's newsletter, one great gift
idea is to host a friend on your domain. While this is a great way to help a
friend share those holiday memories, or help them learn how to design their own
web sites, there are a few things you'll want to consider before taking this
step.
Trust
Be very sure you can trust your new hostee. Be sure that you know what they will
be putting online, and that you are sure they will not use your domain to send
spam or provide other illegal content. Remember, you are responsible for
all activity on your domain, including any of your hostees.
Content
That said, content of your hostee's web site is important. Be sure that
they too will provide legal content. Also be sure that they will not be making
extremely large files available. Finally, they will not be allowed to use
your CGI server or any scripts on your CGI server. We do not allow this for
security reasons. There are other services which can provide CGI scripts that
can be run remotely which your hostee may take advantage of. Or if they have
grown out of the need for basic web hosting that you can provide, have them sign
up for an Active Web Hosting account of their own, which includes full CGI
server features! Be sure they use your domain as a referral so you can get a
monthly credit for every month they are online with their own domain.
E-Mail Addresses
To further prevent spam, we recommend that you do not provide e-mail
addresses for your hostees from your domain, unless you are extremely
sure they will not abuse the privilege. It is best to point them to some of
the free E-Mail services instead, such as
Yahoo! or
HotMail.
They can use a link to their email on one of these services for their visitors
to contact them. This also is nice for them as they can set up a special account
just for their web site, and thus reduce spam in their own personal e-mail box.

we have available that can help. Do be sure to also point them to our
