Uploading Your Installation

Now you are ready to upload your WordPress files and directories to your CGI Server via an FTP program. Before you do this, you need to ensure that you can view hidden files in your FTP program. Where this setting is depends on your FTP program. You will want check the Settings or other menu options.

For example, in FileZilla (a popular cross-platform FTP program), it is in the Server Menu as Force showing hidden files. Click on this option before logging into your CGI Server account to ensure you can view and confirm any hidden files are named properly (especially since you'll be uploading the _htaccess files and then later renaming them in a way that most FTP programs may not show the file).

Upload your renamed WordPress directory, and all it's files and sub-directories to your CGI Server account via FTP. Do not log out of your FTP account yet.

NOTE: Depending on what plugins you are using, this could take some time as there could be a large amount of files to upload.

Rename any _htaccess files to .htaccess

For example, in this tutorial we need to rename the following files to .htaccess (note that you are changing the underscore (_) to a dot (.). You must do this for these files to work on the server.

your_wordpress_dir/wp-includes/_htaccess
your_wordpress_dir/wp-content/uploads/_htaccess

your_wordpress_dir/_htaccess

Fixing Necessary Permissions

After renaming the your_wordpress_dir/_htaccess file, Right click on the file and select to change permissions or attributes. Set this to number 664 (or owner and group writable but not writable by anyone else). Do not change the permissions of the other .htaccess files.

You may want to also ensure that all your file permissions (particularly files in your themes directories) are set to CHMOD 644 to further help protect against insertion of malware.

Right click on the wp-content/uploads folder. Be sure that it is set to CHMOD 775 (owner and group writeable but not writeable by anyone else).

If you created a new index.html file

If you have created an index.html to redirect to your WordPress site, upload this to your CGI Server root directory (ie. not in a sub-directory). If you did not point your domain to your CGI Server account, upload this same index.html file to the root directory of your web hosting account via FTP as well.

Be sure to rename and then download your existing index.html file for safe keeping before uploading the new index.html file.

Do not log out of your FTP program just yet.
