Back Up Your Site

We provide nightly backups of all web sites. However, you may want to back up your site yourself as this may help you ensure that your backup is clean. While there are plugins that do this, these plugins tend to run every time someone visits your site and can slow down your site and leave a lot of extra unnecessary (and very large) files. Therefore if you want to back up your site yourself, we recommend you do so manually and periodically using the method below.

Via WordPress:

This is the recommended option. You can back up all your posts, pages, comments, etc. via WordPress by going into the Tools menu and selecting Export. Be sure All content is selected. You can also use the Tools menu Import function to import your data back in.

Follow steps 1 - 4 in the Manual Backup section below to back up all your WordPress files.

Manual Backup:

1. Create a temporary directory on your hard drive to hold the WordPress files.

2. Log into your CGI server account via FTP. Be sure your FTP program is set to view hidden files.

3. Download all the files and directories in your WordPress directory, including and dot files (such as .htaccess or .htpasswd if used).

4. Log out of your FTP program.

5. Log into phpMyAdmin and click the Export tab at the top.

6. Export Method: Custom

7. Select your database (should be the only one listed)

8. Scroll down to the bottom and click the Go button (do not change any other settings.)

You will then download a *.sql file of your database. Put this in the same directory with your WordPress files but remember don't upload this file to your CGI Server account!

To restore your database:

Be sure all database tables are removed:

1. Click on your database name on the right. Then click the Structure tab at the top.

2. Click the check box at the bottom that says Check All.

3. In the With Selected drop down box, choose Drop. Verify you want to remove the tables by clicking 'Yes'.

Import your Database:

1. Click on the Import tab.

2. Click the Choose File button.

3. Navigate to and select your exported WordPress *.sql database file.

4. Click the Go Button.

NOTE: Some databases are too large to import. If you have this problem, let us know and we will let you know if we can import it for you.
