Question & Answer
What is FTP?
After you have created your web page, you'll need to upload it to the web
server. You do this with a program called a FTP Program or sometimes
called a FTP Client.
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It uses a special internet port to
connect to the web server so that you can upload your files. Once the files are
transferred from your hard drive to the web server, anyone with a web browser
can then view your web pages 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! You can also add,
remove, change and do other things with your files if you need to, using the FTP
program.
First, you'll want to read our Webmaster's Workshop article in this issue to
learn how to choose a good FTP program. Then you can see if we have a
tutorial
on setting up the program to log into your web or CGI server.
If you are going to upload the files to your CGI server, then the host name and
password will be different from your web server host name and password. The CGI
server's FTP host name is usually something like cgi.yourdomain.com
whereas your web server's FTP host name is ftp.yourdomain.com. Your
username will be the same for both, which is simply your domain name. In
addition, be sure you use the correct password since the CGI server and Web
Server should use different passwords for best security.
