XMB Forum 1.9.3
What is XMB Forum?
XMB Forum is a message
forum which you can install on your site. Your visitors register and log in, and
then post messages and interact with other registered members.
NOTICE: This program will not work on our servers at this time.
Unfortunately, we were not able to fully test XMB Forum due to errors in installation.
It is suggested that you try other Alternative Software
listed below.
If anyone knows of a way to remedy the problem and get XMB Forum working,
then please email us at
support@activewebhosting.com
and let us know what different steps you took to get the program running on our
server. We will review the information, test it and if it works, we will adjust this
tutorial accordingly.
Requirements:
To use XMB Forum, you need to be sure your CGI account is set up. Please
see How To Request A CGI Account
for more information. You may also need to have a MySQL account set up if the
script accesses a MySQL database. Most PHP-based scripts require this. Please
see How To Request A MySQL Database.
You will also need to download a copy of
XMB Forum. The version used in this tutorial was 1.9.3-final.
IMPORTANT SECURITY NOTE! Always be sure you have
installed the latest updates and/or patches for the script as well as for any
additional add-ons. Updates are very important to the security and proper
functioning of the script! Our instructions may be for earlier versions of
scripts due to the fact that we are not able to keep up with updates to every
script at all times. It is still up to the domain owner to install and use the
latest version of these scripts.
|
Restrictions:
Remember that only your main account can access CGI scripts on your server. Any
hosting or extra FTP accounts that access these scripts may cause your account
to be deactivated and you'll have to contact
support.
For XMB to work correctly, please do not put it or it's
directories inside your cgi-bin directory. If you do, the script may not work.
It's best to use a separate directory and leave the cgi-bin directory for your
smaller scripts.
Installation:
Create a directory on your hard drive and extract the files from the download
into this directory. You may need a program such as WinZip
to extract the files.
Log on to your CGI server and create a new directory for the XMB forum files. For
this tutorial, we used 'xmbforum' (without quotes). Upload all the files from
the Files directory in the XMB forum directory on your hard drive.
You do not need to upload the /Files/CVS directory or any of the CVS
directories, if you don't want to. There are a lot of files so this may take
awhile, especially for those with dail-up connections.
Change the file permissions for config.php to 666.
Point your web browser to the installation directory, which is
http://cgi.yourdomain.com/xmbforum/install/index.php
(note that yourdomain.com should be replaced with your actual domain name
and xmbforum should be replace with the name of the directory you uploaded
the XMB Forum files to).
Note that if you get an error saying that XMB wasn't installed or configured
correctly, then click on the link to install XMB.
Click the Start Installation button.
Verify you have the latest version. If so, click the Install XMB button.
Read over the terms of use. If you agree (which you must to use the program),
click the I Agree To These Terms button at the bottom.
In the Configuration Method drop down box, choose 2) Attempt to create
config.php for me.
Fill in the following fields in the form. Any instance of yourdomain.com
or yourdomaincom needs to be replaced with your actual domain name. Note
that if the name doesn't include a dot in the example, you should not include
a dot when typing in your domain name.
Database Name: yourdomaincom
Database Username: yourdomaincom
Database Password: Type in your MySQL Password
Database Host: localhost
Database Type: mysql
Table Prefix Setting: xmb_
Full URL: http://cgi.yourdomain.com/xmbforum/ (include the
slash after the path, and also replace xmbforum with the name of the
directory you uploaded the files to.)
Leave all the other options as is (set at default) and click the Configure
button at the bottom (not the Next Step button yet...)
A window should pop up saying that XMB has created your configuration on the
server. You can click Close Window. Note that some web browsers may show
this notice in a new tab instead of a new window.
Click the Next Step button at the bottom of the first window (or tab)
where you were adding the configuration information.
Pick a username and password for the Super Administrator, which should be
you (the domain owner). Also be sure to put in a valid email address. Be sure
to save this information someplace safe. Click the Next button to continue.
NOTE: At this point, we encountered installation errors. The first was a
warning about the $full_url not being configured correctly when it actually
was correct. The second was a Fatal error, after a call to an undefined
function ob_get_level() in the installation directory file cinst.php.
We were not able to resolve this problem.
Log on to your CGI server and delete the install directory from the XMB
Forum directory.
Configuration:
Point your browser to http://cgi.yourdomain.com/xmbforum/
Note: At this point, we got a MySQL error saying that a table with
xmb_settings doesn't exist. When checking the database, it was found that the
installation never created the database tables, even though the username, database
and passwords were all correct.
Thus we could not continue with the testing of this script. It appears that the
MySQL settings were not created.
