TopSites 5.0.2
What is TopSites?
TopSites allows your visitors to add their web site and a small banner. TopSites
also counts hits (how many times their site link was clicked) and ratings. It
also allows your visitors to write a short review about the web site. This
is ideal for affilites, a portal, or a list of popular links on your web site.
Requirements:
To use TopSites, you need to be sure your CGI account is set up. Please
see How To Request A CGI Account
for more information. You may also need to have a MySQL account set up if the
script accesses a MySQL database. Most PHP-based scripts require this. Please
see How To Request A MySQL Database.
You will also need to download a copy of
TopSites. The version used in this tutorial was TopSites 5.0.2.
IMPORTANT SECURITY NOTE! Always be sure you have
installed the latest updates and/or patches for the script as well as for any
additional add-ons. Updates are very important to the security and proper
functioning of the script! Our instructions may be for earlier versions of
scripts due to the fact that we are not able to keep up with updates to every
script at all times. It is still up to the domain owner to install and use the
latest version of these scripts.
|
Restrictions:
Remember that only your main account can access CGI scripts on your server. Any
hosting or extra FTP accounts that access these scripts may cause your account
to be deactivated and you'll have to contact
support.
For TopSites to work correctly, please do not put it or it's
directories inside your cgi-bin directory. If you do, the script may not work.
It's best to use a separate directory and leave the cgi-bin directory for your
smaller scripts.
NOTICE: This program will not work on our servers at this time.
Unfortunately, we were not able to fully install and/or test this program. We
have encountered the following problems:
-
Program reports during installation that the version of PHP is too old.
-
There is to way to continue installation.
We apologize for this inconvenience. It is suggested that you try other
alternative software.
If you are able to get this program to run on our servers, we would greatly
appreciate it if you would contact us at
support@activewebhosting.com
and tell us the steps you took to get the program running. We will review the
information. If our tests show that the program works, we will adjust this
tutorial accordingly.
Installation:
Extract the files in the .zip archive to a directory on your hard drive. You may
need a program such as WinZip to extract the
files.
Log into your CGI server and create a directory for your TopSites. For this tutorial,
we'll be using a directory called topsites.
Change the file permissions of settings_sql.php to 666.
In your web browser, visit http://cgi.yourdomain.com/topsites/install/index.php.
Replace yourdomain.com with your actual domain name and topsites
with the name of the directory you uploaded the TopSites files to.
Select your language from the drop-down box (English is default) and click the
Go button.
Think up a password for the administrator (so you can log in and configure TopSites).
Be sure to save your password in a safe place and not loose it. The URL to the
TopSites directory should stay at default, as it should point to the directory
that you uploaded the TopSites files to.
Type in your email address.
Fill in the following to set up the database:
Database Type: MySQL
Host: (leave as-is at localhost)
Database: yourdomaincom, in other words, your domain name without
the dot.
Username: This is exactly the same as your Database name above.
Password: Your MySQL password
Table prefix: This should stay at default. However, if you want to run more
than one TopSites on your site, you will want to change this to something else
to keep them separate. Any 3 - 4 lowercase letters will do.
When done, click the Install Button.
On the next page you'll see a series of checks that were run by the installation
program. It will also say that the program can not continue due to an old version
of PHP. You won't be able to continue the installation further.
