Gallery2 2.0.2 (Full Version)
What is Gallery2?
Gallery2 is a photo album which you can install and use to organize your collection
of photos. You can also share photos with your friends. There are many features
in Gallery2, depending on the package in which you download. Most people may only
need the Minimal or Typical package. For this tutorail, however,
we have tested the Full package.
NOTICE: This program will not work on our servers at this time.
Unfortunately, we were not able to fully test Gallery2 due the fact that it
requires php Safe Mode to be disabled. We cannot disable safe mode due to security
reasons.
It is suggested that you try other Alternative Software
listed below.
If anyone knows of a way to remedy the problem and get Gallery2 working with safe
mode enabled, then please email us at
support@activewebhosting.com
and let us know what different steps you took to get the program running on our
server. We will review the information, test it and if it works, we will adjust this
tutorial accordingly.
Requirements:
To use Gallery2, you need to be sure your CGI account is set up. Please
see How To Request A CGI Account
for more information. You may also need to have a MySQL account set up if the
script accesses a MySQL database. Most PHP-based scripts require this. Please
see How To Request A MySQL Database.
You will also need to download a copy of
Gallery2. The version used in this tutorial was 2.0.2 (Full package). If you
have a Windows computer, you'll want to download the .zip file. Linux users will
want to download the .tar.gz file.
IMPORTANT SECURITY NOTE! Always be sure you have
installed the latest updates and/or patches for the script as well as for any
additional add-ons. Updates are very important to the security and proper
functioning of the script! Our instructions may be for earlier versions of
scripts due to the fact that we are not able to keep up with updates to every
script at all times. It is still up to the domain owner to install and use the
latest version of these scripts.

Restrictions:
Remember that only your main account can access CGI scripts on your server. Any
hosting or extra FTP accounts that access these scripts may cause your account
to be deactivated and you'll have to contact
support.
For Gallery2 to work correctly, please do not put it or it's
directories inside your cgi-bin directory. If you do, the script may not work.
It's best to use a separate directory and leave the cgi-bin directory for your
smaller scripts.
Installation:
Extract the files from the archive into a temporary directory on your hard drive.
If you use Windows, you may need to use WinZip
to extract the files. There will be a directory called gallery2 which
contain all the files for the gallery.
Log into your CGI server and create a directory for your gallery. For this tutorial,
we will use a directory called gallery2. Upload all the files from the
archive's gallery2 directory to the new directory on your CGI server. Note
that this can take some time as there are a lot of files to upload, espeicially
if you opted to install the Full Package version.
Be sure you are in the new directory on your CGI server. Create a directory inside
your gallery2 directory called g2data and change the directory's permissions
to 777.
Point your web browser to:
http://cgi.yourdomain.com/gallery2/install/index.php
Change yourdomain.com to your actual domain name and gallery2 to
the name of the directory you uploaded the files to.
Note: Due to the fact we keep Safe Mode turned on for
security reasons, you may get error messages about Gallery2 being unable to
set the LANG and LANGUAGE environment variables.
Leave the Language setting at default (English (US)). Due to Safe Mode Restrictions,
it may not be possible to change the language. Click the Begin Installtion
link.
Open a text editor such as Windows Notebad, EditPlus, GEdit or KEdit (do not
use a word processor). Copy the bold stream of characters from the intallation
page into the text editor and save this file as login.txt. Upload this
text file to your Gallery2 directory. Do not click on the correct
version of login.txt link. You must do this step manually. Click on the
Authenticate Me link when done. It should say "Authentication Successful!"
in large green letters. Click the Continue to Step 2 link.
Next is the system checks page. There will be an error about safe mode needing
to be disnabled in order for Gallery2 to run. We can not under any circumstances
disable safe mode due to security reasons. This means that Gallery2 will not
continue with the installation on this server or run.
